Fertilizers

It’s true that every crop or plant has its own demands from the soil for its proper growth. One just can’t grow any crop irrespective of the land and soil type of that area. But gone are these days when one was entirely dependent on the natural richness of the soil in a particular nutrient, necessary for planting a crop.

With the increasing world population, the problem of food security is also increasing at an alarming rate which has gripped not just the developing but the developed nations as well. There is an increasing pressure on the governments to ensure food security to its citizens. This has ultimately raised the amount of pressure on the agriculture sector of the economy. New technologies and alternatives are being used to increase the overall yield, to feed the increasing population and of these, one of the most essential and prerequisite step during cultivation of crops is the use of organic or inorganic materials called fertilizers. These are materials/compounds of natural or synthetic origin added to the soil, and ultimately to the plant, which provide nutrients essential for its good growth. They crowd out weeds, pests and improve curb appeal.

Plants for their proper growth require the following macronutrients which are present on different proportions in almost all fertilizers:

  • Nitrogen
  • Sulfur
  • Phosphorus
  • Magnesium
  • Calcium

Other than these micronutrients other requirements include

  • Zinc
  • Iron
  • Copper
  • Chlorine
  • Boron
  • Water
  • Hydrogen
  • Oxygen

The first five macronutrients are also present in most fertilizers and the last three can be provided by watering them at regular intervals.
